USMS is organized in 52 geographic areas of the United States which are managed by the Local Masters Swimming Committee (LMSC). The Potomac Valley LMSC is responsible for The District of Columbia, the Maryland counties of Montgomery and Prince Georges, and the Virginia counties of Arlington and Fairfax and the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church. Click here for a graphical representation of our region.
The purpose of this webpage is to provide information on the administrative structure behind the Potomac Valley Masters Swimming Committee (PVMSC).
The current PVMSC Board Members meet at least three times per year for open meetings. See below for Minutes from these meetings.
Our Bylaws were first adopted sometime in the 1980s. Unfortunately we do not have the exact date let alone year. If you are reading this and have information that can help us find the answer to the mystery please send an email. The Bylaws were later amended in 1989, 1993, 2006 and 2015. The Bylaws are available in PDF format here:

There are two PV listserves related to PV officers and PV club representatives:
This one contains all of the club representatives + officers. It is a "closed" listserve. By closed it means if you are not on the listserve and you try to send an email to the listserve it will be rejected (to reduce spam and unsolicited emails). It is meant for any business related to masters swimming in Potomac Valley. Your discretion is appreciated. Please remember if you are on the list as firstname.lastname@example.org but send an email from a different address (e.g. your work email) it will be rejected. Typically when emails are sent to this list the intent is for club representatives to cascade the message to their club members. The loophole is these messages may not reach Unattached swimmers (unless those swimmers happen to be members of a club listserve). Please contact Jeff Roddin if you need to update your email address subscription on this list.
This one goes to all of the PV officers (PVChair@usms.org, PVViceChair@usms.org, PVSecretary@usms.org, etc.). Anybody may send a message to this listserve, however, if it is not sent from a PV officer alias it will be held for approval (to reduce spam and unsolicited emails). This listserve is used for communication within the board but is configured as "open" in case any member would like to ask a question, pass along a suggestion, etc. to the board.
** Update: we are having trouble with the above two listserves if you send from a Yahoo or AOL address. Please send from a non Yahoo or AOL address. You can actually send from a Yahoo or AOL email interface as long as you change the FROM: address to be anything but @yahoo.com or @aol.com.
Finally, the Potomac Valley LMSC Registrar can use the USMS Registration System (ESTHER) to send out an email “blast” to each and every swimmer currently registered with an email address on file (this would then capture all Unattached swimmers, too). We try to keep these notifications to a minimum and reserve them for major announcements (e.g. announcing the online availability of a Swimmer’s Ear newsletter). The email will be sent such that any replies go directly to the author/requester. Contact the Registrar if you need this service.
