1999 Long Course Potomac Valley Awards

The Potomac Valley Swimmers of the Year for the 1999 long course meters season, as determined by USMS Top Ten performances, were Barbara Frid (D.C. Masters) and Jeffrey Roddin (Montgomery Ancient Mariners).
Following Frid for the women were Barbara Zaremski (DCM), Margot Pettijohn (ANCM), Anne Walker (DCM), and Joann Leilich (DCM). Matthew Kinney (DCAC), Wally Dicks (ANCM), Michael Fell (ANCM), and Robbie Allen (RMST) rounded out the top five for men.

The following Potomac Valley swimmers turned in the fastest time in USMS competition during the 1999 long course season, resulting in USMS All-American status:
Susan Skiff (DCM) - 45-49: 100 (1:15.40) and 200 butterfly (2:53.42)
Margot Pettijohn (ANCM) - 50-54: 200 breaststroke (3:23.69)
Barbara Frid (DCM) - 55-59: 1500 freestyle (24:01.55) and 50 backstroke (40.72)
Joann Leilich (DCM) - 60-64: 50 (42.98), 100 (1:32.37)*, and 200 (3:23.62)* breaststroke
Jayne Bruner (DCM) - 65-69: 50 freestyle (35.71) and 50 breaststroke (45.95)**
Clay Britt (ANCM) - 35-39: 50 (27.60)* and 100 backstroke (1:00.13)*
Wally Dicks (ANCM) - 35-39: 50 (29.74) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.04)
Lee Bettis (DCM) - 60-64: 100 (1:21.82) and 200 backstroke (3:02.23)
The following relay teams also turned in the fastest USMS times of the season:
DC Masters Womens 240+ 400 freestyle relay** - Barbara Zaremski, Beth Schreiner, Barbara Frid, Jayne Bruner (5:23.68)
Montgomery Ancient Mariners Mens 120+ 200 medley relay - Michael Fell, Wally Dicks, John Feinstein, Jason Crist (1:52.43)
DC Masters Mixed 240+ 200 freestyle relay - Barbara Frid, Beth Schreiner, Lawrence Cohen, Lee Bettis (2:12.19)

Triathlon All-Americans
Inside Triathlon magazine named five Potomac Valley masters to its All-American list. Ancient Mariner Desiree Ficker not only was All-American, but was named the top performer in the 20-24 age group. Other honorees included Eric Sorensen (TRIM) 25-29; Kim McLaughlin (RMST) 30-34; Antonio Panizza (RMST) 60-64 and Marge Stahl (UNAT) 65-69.
Kim McLaughlin and Marjan Huizing (ANCM) also were All-American in duathlon, both in the 30-34 age group.
